Murder charges have been laid against a 41-year-old woman in connection to the Sept. 1 death of another woman in a Burnaby apartment.

Police were called to domestic dispute in an apartment building in the 4100-block Maywood Street just before 6:30 a.m. When they arrived, they found Bayush Hagos dead and another injured.

The 57-year-old Burnaby resident was a multicultural support worker.

Ayelech Zenebe Ejigu has been charged with second-degree murder, according to a news release from the RCMP's Integrated Homicide Investigation Team.

Police said Ejigu is known to police and was recently charged with the attempted murder of another person. She remains in custody.

Hagos had been trying to help Ejigu find housing, police say, and had allowed Ejigu to temporarily stay with her temporarily as she searched for a more permanent placement.

Friends of the murder victim have been holding a vigil at Hagos's apartment since her death to remember the woman.
