Unionized workers at a Burnaby agency that helps people with disabilities are joining the picket lines today, as part of a larger one-day strike across the province.
Workers at the Burnaby-based PosAbilities agency, represented by the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union, are on strike along with 3,400 community living workers in B.C.
According to the union, the key issues are wages and government funding for community living programs.
"Community living workers are caring professionals that make sure the people with developmental disabilities participate in their community and enjoy the best quality of life possible," said BCGEU spokesperson Patsy Harmston, in a press release.
"We enjoy working with people, but many of us can't make ends meet. Starting wages are $15 an hour, a dollar less than 10 years ago," she said. "Many of us have had to take on second jobs or are having to leave the work we love."
In Burnaby, workers picketed along Lougheed Highway, close to Brentwood Town Centre.
