Students and youth from Burnaby and across the Lower Mainland are coming together to help the most vulnerable in their communities.

United under the name Vancouver Against Corona, they are part of the international students’ movement Students Against Corona.

Here in Burnaby, Vancouver Against Corona welcomed to their team 40 volunteers and launched its first initiative to tackle food insecurity that is disproportionately affecting various local communities by supporting local neighbourhood houses and food banks.

The first food drive was initiated by Sofiya Kominko in North Burnaby, where a team of volunteers collected hundreds of non-perishable food items.

“The efforts don’t stop at food drives,” said a news release. “The student volunteer collective emphasized the need for virtual fundraisers. With every dollar raised, the Greater Vancouver Food Bank can buy $3 worth of healthy food for distribution.”
