Joe Keithley, of DOA fame, is organizing a benefit show for the protesters' legal defense fund on Jan. 31 at the Rickshaw in Vancouver.

Punk rock legend Joe Keithley is throwing his support behind the anti-pipeline protesters with a benefit concert on Saturday, Jan. 31 in Vancouver.

Keithley is a longtime Burnaby resident and frontman for the legendary punk band DOA. Proceeds from the show will go towards the legal defence fund for protesters targeted in a multi-million dollar suit from Kinder Morgan, currently before the B.C. Supreme Court.

"They are just using this tactic, basically threatening this huge lawsuit," Keithley said. "They are being bullies, and I can't believe they would go that far."

Keithley is now working on securing other bands for the benefit show, and all genres are welcome.

"I'm trying to make it a B.C. all star musical lineup," he said.

Keithley now lives in South Burnaby, but he grew up about a block from the Kinder Morgan tank farm and used to go ice-skating on the fire pond in winter. (The pond is a water supply for firefighting.)

"The gates were always open, so the kids from the neighbourhood, we'd be up their skating every winter," he said. "There's another fire hole we used... as a swimming hole, we used that as well. It was the teenage hangout."

Keithley is opposed to the Kinder Morgan and Enbridge pipeline expansions.

The show is scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 31 at the Rickshaw in Vancouver. Keithley is hoping to raise $15,000 to $20,000 for the protesters. An online crowdfunding campaign for the protesters' legal fees hit $46,370 on Thursday morning.
