Burnaby's Willingdon Park wins Excellence Award at real estate awards

A sold-out crowd at the Marriot Vancouver Pinnacle was on hand last Thursday to see the Maria Keary Cottage, a 35-bed supportive housing facility located at 305 Carnarvon St. win the top honour in the Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver second annual Commercial Building Awards.

The cottage won the Judges' Choice Award and added the Excellence Award in the community facility's category for owner, Westcoast Genesis Society; architect, Pattison Architecture; and general contractor, Colter Developments.

Also winning an Excellence Award in the Office was Willingdon Park at 4350 Still Creek Dr. in Burnaby.

"This event is about celebrating innovation, talent and the spirit of collaboration in our building community," Rosario Setticasi, president of the board said in a press release. "These awards are a salute to professionals committed to meeting the needs of today without sacrificing those of future generations."

The Dockyards at Port Royal, 200 - 202 Salter St., also won a merit award in the rentals/affordable housing category.

The judges evaluated each submission on the following criteria:

* Does it complement or add to the surrounding properties and neighbourhood?

* Is it esthetically pleasing?

* What construction materials were used in the overall design?

* Has the developer incorporated any unique architectural features?

* Is the nomination built in an environmentally sensitive manner?

* Does this project compare to other projects in the same category?
