The case total at a Burnaby long-term care facility has grown, according to the latest government update.

Fraser Health declared a COVID-19 outbreak at the George Derby Centre nine days ago on Nov. 10, 2021, when 10 cases were confirmed involving six residents and four staff members.

The facility is owned and operated by George Derby Care Society.

The latest Weekly COVID-19 Long Term Care, Assisted Living and Independent Living Outbreak Report released by the BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) made available today (Nov. 19) shows as of Nov. 16, 2021, 17 total cases have been discovered involving 12 residents and five staff.

There have been no deaths.

Last November, the George Derby Centre had a massive, tragic outbreak with 109 cases confirmed and 36 lives lost.

Fraser Health says they proactively implemented the following measures at the facility:

  • Staffing levels are being supported to maintain resident care
  • Social visits are restricted in the affected areas of the facility. Essential visits can continue
  • Staff and residents movement in the affected areas of the facility has been modified to minimize exposure to others
  • Cleaning and infection control measures have been further enhanced
  • Residents, families and staff are being notified
  • Twice a day screening of all staff and residents is taking place
  • Additional testing and screening is in place to support monitoring of disease control

"During this time, Fraser Health has additional presence at the sites to take any further actions required and support the facility," a statement on Nov. 10.

"This includes dedicated people to address quality, answer questions from staff, residents and family, and provide active checks of symptoms with staff and residents."

Cascade Gardens in Burnaby is also still under a COVID-19 outbreak declaration, with two cases discovered.

The outbreak was declared on Oct. 27, 2021.
