The annual South Burnaby Neighbourhood House street party was a success, bringing roughly 450 people out to meet their neighbours and enjoy a day of food, fun and dancing on Aug. 8.

"It went really, really well. It was very successful," said program director Sara Shaw. "I think it's just great to see such a variety in the community. We have everyone from newborns up to people in their 90s there, and everyone interacts together and has a really good time."

The goal of the event is to bring neighbours together and showcase what the neighbourhood house does. The non-profit organization offers a number of programs, including English language classes, tax clinics for low-income folks and child care at a number of Burnaby schools.

They also host the "sharing cultures" dinners, where people gather for a low-cost meal featuring a particular culture.

The annual open house always includes a low-cost barbecue and activities for kids.

One of this year's highlights was a surprise flash mob dance, performed by neighbourhood house members, who incorporated a few choreographic elements from other cultures.
