A 19-year-old youth was fatally injured in a hit-and-run at Macpherson Avenue and Marine Drive in the early morning hours of March 26, 2021.

Charges were laid this week in a hit-and-run that killed 19-year-old Burnaby South Secondary School grad Damien Seguin nearly three years ago.

Brandon Glen Lowe, 22, was charged Monday with one count of failing to stop at the scene of a fatal accident and one count of attempting to obstruct justice, according to the Vancouver provincial court registry.

The charges relate to a crash at Macpherson Avenue and Marine Drive at about 12:20 a.m. on March 26, 2021, according to information released by police at the time.

First responders were called to the intersection for a report of a pedestrian hit, police said.

At the scene, officers found a 19-year-old male, later identified as Seguin, who had been hit by a car.

He was rushed to hospital with life-threatening injuries but died several days later.

Police later said it appeared there had been a confrontation between people from three different vehicles before the crash.

"At one point, pepper spray was deployed," RCMP Cpl. Brett Cunningham said in a news release at the time. "Shortly thereafter, our 19-year-old victim exited one of these vehicles, at which point he was struck by the suspect vehicle."

That vehicle immediately fled the scene, according to police.

A golf club was also recovered at the scene.

Cunningham said investigators believed the confrontation between the three vehicles had begun elsewhere and ended near Macpherson Avenue and Marine Drive.

Police arrested a 19-year-old Vancouver man at his home in May 2021 and seized the vehicle investigators believed was involved in the crash, but police didn't name the suspect at that time, and no charges were approved in the case until this week.

Lowe appeared in Vancouver provincial court Wednesday and was released pending his next appearance on April 17.

Because of a publication ban, no information presented at his bail hearing can be made public.
