Cadets from the People’s Public Security University of Beijing stopped by the local detachment last Friday to meet with Burnaby RCMP officers.

Thirty-three police cadets and three instructors from China made the journey across the Pacific to spend two weeks in the Lower Mainland as part of an international program run by the Justice Institute of B.C. in New Westminster.

Staff Sgt. Maj. John Buis was approached by Ken Davies, a retired Vancouver police officer who now runs the international program at the justice institute, about arranging a visit for the cadets.

The international program is tailored specifically to each group. For the 33 police cadets from Beijing, Davies arranged a variety of activities in addition to classroom time, including trips to Victoria, Harrison and Whistler.

“We bring in subject matter experts, and we create unique programs, and everyone is different, and we deliver exactly what they requested as well as giving them a little bit of tourist activity while they’re here,” he said.

While in Burnaby, the cadets met with Buis, two motorcycle officers and two general duty constables. They also got to check out some of the department’s vehicles, including two patrol cars and some motorcycles.
