A Burnaby church is hosting a public forum on the Kinder Morgan expansion.
The Saint Timothy Anglican Church is inviting the community to come Wednesday, June 27, from 6: 30 to 8 p.m. to a forum on the proposed Kinder Morgan plan to expand the Trans Mountain pipeline, which runs oil from Alberta to Burnaby.
"This is something we are organizing," said Pastor Stephanie Shepard. "We want to have a balanced information meeting for the community. ... We figured it was time. There's been a lot of press, but there has not been a forum to bring people together to discuss the issues."
The church has invited federal, provincial and municipal politicians, as well as representatives from First Nations groups, Kinder Morgan and the local Chevron refinery.
According to the church, the forum will be one of the first opportunities for Burnaby residents to have their say about the proposed pipeline expansion and hear the views of local representatives and stakeholders. St. Timothy Anglican Church is at 4550 Kitchener St.
Gordon Arthur, a spokesperson for the church, said the forum is not about advocacy or presenting a particular view.
"It's an information session," he said. "(The pipeline) goes past properties that several of our people live in. We're also concerned about environmental issues."
Kinder Morgan is hoping to twin the Trans Mountain pipeline, increasing capacity from 300,000 barrels per day to 750,000, but the company has not yet applied to the National Energy Board for project approval.
