Circus on stage at Shadbolt

The Shadbolt Centre for the Arts is being transformed into a big top this month to kick off another season of live theatre.

The Inner Ring Circus will perform "Live at the 'Bolt," Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. at the Shadbolt Centre, 6450 Deer Lake Avenue.

This show features an eclectic troupe of performers, directed by a distinguished ringmaster along with his ring mistress.

This seemingly dysfunctional circus group indulges its individual egos, with each member continually trying to dominate the stage.

The performers will, "entice the audience into a mad world of aerials, acrobatics and brain-teasing visuals," according to a press release.

"We're so excited about our new theatre season and what better way to kick it off than with the jaw-dropping Inner Ring Circus?" Cory Philley, City of Burnaby facility and event services coordinator, said in the release. "This year is all about the magical and transformative nature of live performance, and we wanted to give our audience an experience they won't find anywhere else but at the Shadbolt."

Admission is free. For more information about Inner Ring Circus, visit www.innerring.ca.

High tech art

No need to leave your couch to get some culture these days.

The Burnaby Art Gallery has launched a new bilingual website and publication on senior Canadian artist Takao Tanabe.

Through a commitment to exhibiting culturally important works on paper, the website www. formandplace.ca showcases works from both the touring exhibition and publication Chronicles of Form and Place: Works on Paper.

Incorporated in this website is a full image gallery of Tanabe's works, a selection of texts, programs and activities for educators, as well as exclusive footage of the artist's studio.

The website will be a resource and an opportunity to examine the artist's rich history of art making, contribution to Canadian culture and personal story.

Held at the Burnaby Art Gallery this winter, this exhibition is a retrospective of the artist's works on paper - many never before seen by the public. Check out the site, or drop in to the gallery at 6344 Deer Lake Avenue.

The exhibition will continue with a tour to the McMaster Museum of Art in Hamilton, Ontario, The Nanaimo Art Gallery in Nanaimo and The Reach in Abbotsford.
