City approves $1.75-million parks projects

Burnaby council approved nearly $1.75 million in funding for 12 capital projects at the Jan. 28 council meeting.

The projects, through the parks, recreation and cultural services department, include $200,000 for upgrades at the Eileen Dailly pool, $140,000 for irrigation at the Burnaby Mountain golf course, $165,000 for renovations at the Riverway golf course, and $200,000 for trail system development at Burnaby Mountain park.

Other projects include replacing picnic tables and benches, work on park roads and parking lots, playground upgrades, and more.

Burnaby Family Life, other orgs, receiving funding

Burnaby council approved a grant of $16,000 for Burnaby Family Life's services at the Jan. 28 council meeting.

The Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention Centre of B.C. received a large grant - $4,000 - for its services as well.

The Wildlife Rescue Association was approved for a grant of $500 for its fundraising gala.

Council also approved an in-kind grant of $1,500 for printing services for the Burnaby Empty Bowls Gala, an in-kind grant of $2,000 for printing services for the Rotary Club of Burnaby Metrotown's Wine, Food and Music Festival, and green fee waivers for the Burnaby Hospital Foundation's and the Michael J. Fox Theatre's annual fundraising golf tournaments at Riverway Golf Course.

Cell block retrofit contract awarded

Heatherbrae Builders Co. Ltd. has been given the contract for the RCMP cell block retrofit construction project.

Council approved the contract for $884,800 at a meeting in December.

The work will include safety upgrades such as replacing open bar doors and partitions with solid ones, according to the report.

Council had previously approved a $1.4 million budget for the project.
