Three Burnaby arts groups will be able to take their creative work that much further this year after receiving grants from the B.C. Arts Council.

The council approved three grants last month totalling $12,850 for Poetry is Dead Magazine Society, the West Coast Review Publishing Society and local artist Julia Nolan.

The magazine society received $3,500, the publishing society received $8,000, and Nolan received $1,350.

"As a former president of the Burnaby Arts Council, I know we enjoy a thriving local arts scene," said Burnaby-Lougheed MLA Harry Bloy in a press release. "The support from the province will help ensure this tradition continues."

Each year, artists and cultural organizations can apply for grants from the B.C. Arts Council - a publicly funded, independent agency of the B.C. government established in 1995.

The council enlists the input of the B.C. arts community to evaluate funding applications through an independent peer review process.

During the 2012/13 fiscal year, the provincial government will fund $16,831,000 for the council to support arts and culture in communities throughout the province.

Since 2001, the council has granted more than $185 million to artists and cultural organizations in B.C.

Last year, the council approved 1,027 grants from applicants from more than 200 communities.
