City businesses up for special BBOT awards

Thirty-one Burnaby businesses made the finalist list for the Burnaby Board of Trade's 2012 Business Excellence Awards. The list of names was announced Oct.

Thirty-one Burnaby businesses made the finalist list for the Burnaby Board of Trade's 2012 Business Excellence Awards.

The list of names was announced Oct. 10 at the annual Burnaby Business Hall of Fame induction luncheon at the Hilton Vancouver Metrotown.

The awards will be presented at the Burnaby Business Excellence Awards gala on Nov. 7 at the hotel.

"It's a chance for people to get some recognition for the things they're doing and get their name out there in the community," said Cory Redekop, events manager for the board.

The finalists are:

Business of the Year: Canlan Ice Sports; Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers; FortisBC.

Small Business of the Year: Williams & White; Ballistic Arts; West Pacific Consulting Group; Gloo Studios; Trio Diamond and Gold Jewellery.

Business Innovation: Teradici; Sorin Group Canada; Vivonet.

Entrepreneurial Spirit: Gloo Studios; Ballistic Arts; Gluten Free Expo.

Not for Profit: Burnaby Firefighters Charitable Society; Computers for Schools, B.C.; Down Syndrome Research Foundation; St. Matthews Day Care Society.

Burnaby Community Spirit Award: Silver Bullet Shredding; Vancity Burnaby Heights Community Branch; Community Savings Credit Union; Scotiabank; Save-On-Foods HighGate.

Environmental Sustainability: Kensington Square Return-It Centre; Whistler Water; Gourmet Baker; Delta Burnaby Hotel.

Family Friendly Business: Pacific Blue Cross, CGA Canada; Simon Fraser University Childcare Society.

Business Person of the Year: Mark Bodie, Habitat Systems; Mark Schnarr, Alpha Technologies; Tina Osen, HUB International.
