City dancers in The Nutcracker

The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is putting a decidedly Canadian twist on the classic Russian ballet, The Nutcracker, presented by Ballet BC at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre in Vancouver, with local dancers on stage in various roles.

Daina Zolty performs the role of Clara, while Merissa Mah will dance the role of Dieter. Selmah Kapidzic and Shona Kiyama perform as Mounties, Alyssa Sasis and Sharleen Sais perform as angels, while Emma Earle will dance the role of a mouse.

Set at the turn of the 20th century in Canada, this ballet offers a unique take on the timeless Christmas tradition, featuring quintessentially Canadian scenes, such as a hockey game and a battle on Parliament Hill.

The Nutcracker will be held from Dec. 14 to 16, at 7: 30 p.m., with two matinee shows at 2 p.m. on Dec. 15 and 16.
