Burnaby's social sustainability strategy has won the 2012 Canadian Institute of Planners Award for Planning Excellence in the category of social planning.
"Our social sustainability strategy is one of our greatest recent achievements," said Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan in a press release. "Its development was innovative and deliberately collaborative with significant public involvement."
A 25-member, blue-ribbon steering committee worked on the strategy, and more than 700 Burnaby residents participated in the city's public sessions, he said.
"The strategy is bold, visionary and inspiring and will guide the city's social plans and resource allocations over the next 10 or so years," Corrigan said.
Burnaby is working towards becoming Canada's most sustainable community, according to the release.
The strategy, which was introduced last July, is part of a three-pronged approach to managing Burnaby. The other two strategies are the economic sustainability, the first strategy the city introduced. The City of Burnaby then began work on its environmental sustainability strategy last winter.
