The City of Burnaby has taken the pledge for a sustainable community, which is the latest initiative from the Burnaby Board of Trade.
The city joins more than 80 other organizations across the Lower Mainland to join the board of trade, by taking new green actions to implement or list on-going actions already in practice in the workplace.
"Every decision we make and each initiative we undertake we do with full consideration for its potential environmental impact," said Mayor Derek Corrigan, in a media release. "Because of our longstanding commitment to the environment, we are thrilled to now participate in the Burnaby Board of Trade's exemplary sustainability pledge initiative that offers Burnaby - and all of our city's businesses - the opportunity to collaborate and challenge ourselves to do even better."
Corrigan said the city is engaging with all members of the community to help develop its environmental sustainability strategy.
"I'm proud of the contribution that so many of our city's businesses have already made to Burnaby's environment and of the further commitment their participation in the Burnaby Board of Trade's important pledge initiative represents," he said.
The first business to pledge was Electronic Arts Canada.
"At Electronic Arts we take environmental stewardship seriously, not only because we want to be good corporate citizens, but because it also makes good business sense," said Frank Bassett, EA's senior director of facilities and corporate services.
The sustainability initiative is an online resource designed to help businesses reduce their environmental impact while promoting their business.
Although the initiative had a soft launch late last year, it's officially kicking off at the Burnaby Board of Trade forum on May 1.
The forum will take place at Delta Burnaby Hotel and Conference Centre from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Corrigan will discuss the city's sustainability strategy at the event.
