Burnaby council is helping seniors get around town.
Council approved a grant for $13,000 to Burnaby Community Connections for its seniors transportation program at the July 16 council meeting.
Burnaby Community Connections also had a grant of $9,000 approved by council for its service and program costs, and another grant for $17,000 to administer the Burnaby Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services credit program this year.
Burnaby Meals on Wheels is also getting a grant from the city - $9,000 for its delivery service costs.
Council also approved a number of youth sportsrelated grants.
The Burnaby Girls Soccer Club was granted $1,000 for the travel expenses of 10 members of the U18 Metro Strikers to the B.C. Provincial Soccer A Cup Championships in Kamloops earlier this month.
The B.C. Lacrosse Association had a grant for $350 approved, to help with travel expenses for Tavin Grant and Lucas Greene to the Commissioners Bantam National Championships in Whitby, Ont. next month.
Ice skater Veniamins (Ben) Volskis was awarded a grant of $175 to assist with travel expenses to the Quebec Summer Competition in Montreal in August.
He placed third at the B.C. skating sectionals last November.
Council also approved one Festivals Burnaby grant request at the meeting.
Nelson Elementary School was awarded $3,000 for its centennial celebrations on Sept. 27 and 28.
The two-day anniversary festival will include exhibits, displays and performances to celebrate 100 years of learning, according to a report from the executive committee of council.
