City retirements keep coming

Twenty city staffers retire in first half of 2012

The number of City of Burnaby staff members retiring annually has been rising during the past few years, and 2012 is no exception.

Twenty city staff members retired between January and June this year, including the deputy city manager and the director of planning and building, according to a staff report from the city's director of human resources, Kim Munro. The City of Burnaby had 24 of its staffers retire during the same time period in 2011, and 16 during the same time period in 2010. There were 17 retirements for all of 2009.

Rick Earle shared his deputy city manager duties with Chad Turpin, who continues on as deputy city manager. Earle, who started working in the finance department in 1982, retired at the end of May.

And Basil Luksun, the city's director of planning and building, retired at the end of May as well. Luksun started working in the planning department in August 1973.

The other staff members who retired thus far this year are:

Gerry Funk, a level 3 draftsperson with the city's engineering department who started working for Burnaby in June 1986;

John Golat, a parking enforcement supervisor who started working for the city in June 1976;

Brian Sarginson, a level 2 tradesman painter with the city's engineering department who started in January 1974;

- Michael Poirier, a level 3 truck driver with the parks, recreation and cultural services department who started working for Burnaby in August 1974;-

- Philip Watson, a parks janitor with the parks, recreation and cultural services department who began working for the city in October 1993;

-Rod Short, an engineering system operator with the parks, recreation and cultural services department who started working for Burnaby in August 1977;

-Kevin Grant, a fire lieutenant who began working for the fire department in August 1993;

-Angie Johnson, a level 1 accounting clerk with the financing department who began working for the city in 1968;

-Douglas Baryluk, a level 1 central stores labourer with the parks, recreation and cultural services department who started with the city in 1989;

- Stanley Wilkinson, a level 2 garage clerk with the engineering department who began working for Burnaby in September 1996;

-Raj Foster, an executive assistant for the city manager's office who began working for the city in June 1992;

- Brian Cousineau, a senior human resources advisor who started with the parks, recreation and cultural services department in October 1979;

-Thomas Foreman, an assistant fire chief who began working for the city in May 1977;

-Farmand Ghafari, an electrical inspections supervisor who started working for the planning and building department in 1988;

-Perry Woznesensky, a sanitation foreman who started working for the engineering department in August 1975;

- Ward Rossiter, an assistant fire chief who began working for the fire department in January 1977;

-Nigel colclough, a fire captain who began working for the fire -department in June 1982;

- and Julie-Anne Slade, a special events officer who started working for the parks, recreation and cultural services department in 1980.

In all, the retirees thus far in 2012 have worked for a total of 574 years for the City of Burnaby.
