A Burnaby Grade 10 student is getting a chance to try her video-game design skills on state-of-the art equipment normally used by master’s students this summer.

Burnaby South Secondary student Jasmine Wu, 15, is enrolled in the Tomorrow’s Masters of Digital Media Program, a three-week boot camp for teens at Vancouver’s Centre for Digital Media.

The program is taught by the centre’s faculty and uses the same equipment the master of digital media students use to earn their master’s degrees.

The camp, from Aug. 10 to 28, teaches students basic software skills and game design, how to critique video games, how to tell stories through digital media and a better understanding of the business of digital media.

Program partners are Electronic Arts, Vancouver ACM SIGGRAPH, External Development Summit (XDS), and Roadhouse Interactive.

Looking for off-campus housing?

Simon Fraser University has partnered with a student housing-service company to make finding an off-campus place to live easier.

Places4Students.com, a business that works with schools in Canada and the U.S., is introducing a service – free for students – that will simplify students’ search for housing near the university’s campuses with rental-property searches, student sublet postings and roommate profile listings that students can access 24/7 using a mobile app.

Landlords and property managers can use Places4Students.com to advertise rental properties directly to SFU students.

Rental property listings include a map showing the property’s proximity to the university, amenity icons, up to 24 property photos, floor plans, leasing details and a lengthy description field.

Newcomer orientation

Newcomers to Canada can find out all about local schools at two Burnaby school district orientations coming up next month.

Maywood Community School (4567 Imperial St.) hosts an elementary school orientation Wednesday, Sept. 2 from 9:30 a.m. to noon, and Burnaby South Secondary (5455 Rumble St.) hosts a high school session Thursday, Sept. 3 from 9:30 am to noon in Room E212.

The events will give parents and students a chance to meet principals, English language learning consultants, counsellors and other students, and find out about student support services and how to support students at home. A Settlement Worker in Schools will be on hand at each session to answer questions.

To register for the elementary session, email [email protected] or call 604-760-9527. For the high school session, email [email protected] or call 604-760-9051.
