Shop for groceries; support literacy

Shoppers will get a chance to support local literacy at the Marketplace IGA supermarket at 4469 Kingsway in Burnaby Friday.

The One to One Literacy Society will have a booth set up at the store from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., promoting its program and signing up volunteers.

Shoppers can also “top up at the till” at any Marketplace IGA until the end of September and donate $2 to the program, which provides one-to-one reading assistance by trained volunteers to elementary school students who struggle with reading.

One to One operates at six Burnaby schools (Aubrey, Lochdale, Morley, Second Street, Stride Avenue and Windsor), providing half-hour sessions to participating kids twice a week.

New finance VP at SFU

The Fraser Health Authority’s top money man takes on a new role at Simon Fraser University next month.

Martin Pochurko, the health authority’s chief financial officer, has been appointed the university’s new vice-president of finance and administration, effective Oct. 15.

Pochurko’s public sector career includes a previous stint at SFU, where he served as associate vice-president of finance from 2007 to 2012.

He also worked at the University of British Columbia and held several senior management roles during 15 years at the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia (ICBC).

Pochurko takes on the SFU position after former VP of finance and administration, Pat Hibbitts, passed away unexpectedly in June.
