Alpha Secondary School leadership students pushed through an hour-long power outage Friday to pull off an annual Thanksgiving lunch and raise close to $1,000 for B.C. Children’s Hospital and the Burnaby Food Bank.

The annual event isn’t normally a fundraiser, according parent Allison Johns, but a generous donation from the Madison Centre Save On Foods, including 40 rotisserie chickens, potatoes, corn, gravy, green salad and pumpkin pies, will allow the Grade 10 leadership students and teacher Tammy Wirick to donate the proceeds from the approximately 125 $8 tickets sold.

An hour-long power outage in the area from about 10 to 11 a.m. was minutes away from closing the school and wiping out the students hard work, Johns said, but the power was restored just in time.

Student Vote

Students in the Burnaby school district will hit the polls a few days early in the upcoming federal election. All eight local high schools and 30 elementary schools have signed up for Student Vote, a program that teaches kids about Canada’s electoral system by getting them to vote for their local candidates in parallel elections.
