A community cleanup event ended with a call to RCMP after volunteers found a broken safe a bike, and couple of bags of pot.

Burnaby resident Sue From organized the community cleanup for Saturday, June 16. According to From, about 16 people showed up, and they came across some unusual items while ridding the neighbourhood of trash.

"Interesting finds were a broken, open safe, a real nice bicycle in the bushes, a $10 bill, a pretty butterfly with a broken wing, and a bag of pot," wrote From in an email to the Burnaby NOW. From said there were actually two small bags of pot.

"We called the RCMP to remove the three items, and the $10 was donated to Connections (Coffee House) by the person who found it. We had a super lunch - all this thanks to the support of the Vancouver Foundation and the (South Burnaby Neighbourhood House) small grants program."

Cpl. Rick Skolrood, the Burnaby RCMP's media relations officer, confirmed a safe and bike were turned in, but at press time, he could not find a record of the marijuana.

"We're going to look into it," he said. "I'm sure everything is fine."

The bike and safe, which had no identifying marks, were taken to a recycling depot, Skolrood said.
