The hardwood floor at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre was described as no worse for wear by City of Burnaby staff following a ball hockey tournament that left the local lacrosse community crying foul.

At issue was the state of the more than $660,000 floor at the Copeland centre following last weekend's Western Challenge Cup ball hockey championships in Burnaby.

The four days of competition by under-11 and u-13 teams left the bright green surface dull and extensively scuffed by the use of hockey sticks on the floor's surface.

Lacrosse people, who use the floor almost exclusively, called the resulting condition of the floor, "A shame."

Three maintenance staff at the Copeland centre gave the maplewood surface a three-hour cleaning on Tuesday, according to the manufacturer's specifications.

The resulting cleanup left the floor in an acceptable condition after what staff described as a normal week of wear and tear. No additional cleanup was deemed necessary.

"It came back beautifully," said Wendy Scott, assistant director of recreation with Burnaby parks, recreation and cultural services on Thursday.

However, the arena staff is still assessing whether minor maintenance is necessary, and when and in what year that might take place, said Scott.

"We feel how it's looking, it might go four or five years," Scott added.

Light maintenance would include a light sanding to the surface of the floor and a coat of varnish, and likely take two weeks to complete, she said.

Staff will also prepare a complete report to the parks and rec commission, which would likely come before the board in September at the earliest.
