#CQCompStat: Maillardville is the current 'hotspot' for property theft, Coquitlam RCMP reports

Police are keeping an extra watchful eye on the neighbourhood due to recent vehicle theft, theft from vehicles and recent break-and-enters.

It appears thieves have recently been targeting personal property kept inside vehicles across Coquitlam and Port Coquitlam.

However, one neighbourhood stands out.

While the detachment continues to monitor activity across the Tri-City region, RCMP has taken note of a particular hotspot in Maillardville that's seen a cluster of break-and-enters.

This has included crimes such as theft from vehicles, theft of vehicles, business break-and-enters and other related incidents.

As a result, Mounties are focusing on an area north of Highway 1 for its latest two-week CompStat strategy.

Until Oct. 19, residents can expect RCMP roaming near the following:

  • From Thrift Street in the west to Schoolhouse Street in the east
  • From Thomas Avenue in the north to Lougheed Highway in the south

In the meantime, Coquitlam police are urging the public to take all steps necessary when it comes to protecting personal property to curb potential theft.

This includes:

  • Locking doors and closing windows
  • Parking in well-lit/well-populated areas where "natural surveillance" can serve as a deterrent
  • Closing garage doors at night
  • Taking your garage opener, house and/or business keys and vehicle registration papers out of your vehicle when it’s parked
  • If thieves steal these items, they could use them to commit other crimes including identity theft and break-and-enter

Anyone who witnesses suspicious activity is encouraged to call Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 or call 911 if there’s a theft in progress.
