One man is dead after a Monday afternoon car accident near the intersection of Lougheed Highway and Willingdon Avenue.

The man was driving an SUV eastbound on Lougheed Highway just before 1 p.m. when he hit a white On Side Restoration truck.

The truck was travelling in the righthand lane and was turning into the Esso gas station at the southeast corner of the Lougheed Highway and Willingdon Avenue when the SUV, which was travelling in the bicycle lane, struck the side of the truck.

"We are looking into all aspects of what may have caused this accident," Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Rick Skolrood told the Burnaby NOW on Tuesday morning. "We need to try and put together the exact sequence of events that led to this accident."

Skolrood said preliminary indications are the truck driver was making a legal turn into the gas station.

"At this point, we don't have any indication there is liability on the part of the truck driver," said Skolrood. "We do know the (SUV) driver was in the wrong lane at the time of the accident, but how he got there and why he was there is something our investigators are looking into."

A dog which had been the in SUV was unhurt in the collision and was turned over to the SPCA for care. Traffic along Lougheed and Willingdon was snarled for much of Monday afternoon.

Members of the Burnaby RCMP traffic section and the integrated collision analysis and reconstruction service team are working on the case.
