Two companies involved in construction going on near where a 14-year-old Burnaby resident was killed Thursday say they are halting their truck traffic in the area.
The NOW received a statement by Ward McAllister, president and CEO of Ledingham McAllister, and Marco Paolella, president of Marcon Construction, two companies building the Southgate City development.
The statement addressed the death of a Byrne Creek high school student who was struck and killed by a dump truck in the 7100 block of 11th Avenue. Area residents have raised concerns about truck traffic in the area, as well as the lack of sidewalks for pedestrians. Another pedestrian was struck six months earlier by a truck in the same area, prompting a meeting between residents, the city and RCMP.
“Our current traffic management plan was created under the direction of the City of Burnaby’s traffic department,” says the statement. “We are now reviewing that plan with the city and will determine if there is another route construction trucks can use, per the community’s request to reroute traffic away from 11th Avenue.”
In the short term, the companies are halting all truck traffic related to the project.
“We acknowledge everyone who has been impacted by the devastating loss of a young member of the community, and we will halt all work involving heavy trucks related to our construction site for the next several days to give the community an opportunity to grieve without distraction,” said the statement.
