'Distress' call leads police to suspected drug lab in Burnaby: RCMP

The RCMP's clandestine laboratory team was at a residential property in the 6200 block of Thorne Avenue in South Burnaby Friday and Saturday investigating a suspected illicit drug lab.

A 911 call for a "person in distress" led police to a suspected illicit drug lab in South Burnaby over the weekend, according to the Burnaby RCMP.

The detachment got a call just after 8 p.m. Friday night about a "person in distress" at a residential property in the 6200 block of Thorne Avenue, according to spokesperson Cpl. Mike Kalanj.

"Members went down there thinking someone needed assistance," he told the NOW. "They were looking to, obviously, make sure no one was in danger, everyone was safe."

Officers didn't find anyone in distress, Kalanj said, but they did find evidence of a drug lab.

Kalanj said police secured the property and later returned with a search warrant and the RCMP clandestine laboratory team, which was on scene overnight Friday and into Sunday.

"It's an open investigation, so that's all the information I can provide," Kalanj said.

Photos from the scene show a property off Thorne Avenue behind police tape and officers in hazmat gear removing items from a house.
