Burnaby's Hindu temple is celebrating Diwali with a special event this Saturday at the Michael J Fox Theatre.

This year is the 41st annual Diwali cultural show for the temple, which is celebrating with a vegetarian feast and live entertainment. Diwali marks the beginning of the new year on the Hindu calendar, and the holiday involves lighting earthen lamps to brighten homes.

"Lighting of lamps is the way to paying obeisance to God for attainment of health, wealth, knowledge and peace," said Shanker Chowdhry, secretary for the temple. "All of this illumination, joy and festivities is to signify the victory of divine forces over those of malice."

Tickets are $15 or $25 for two, and that includes food. The dinner runs from 4:30 to 6:15 p.m., followed by songs, dances and plays.

The Michael J Fox Theatre is at 7373 MacPherson Ave.
