If you see firefighters rushing around some parts of Burnaby today (Saturday, May 7), don’t be alarmed – it’s just a big training session.

The Burnaby Fire Department is hosting a wildland firefighting training event.

Fire departments from multiple cities will be in Burnaby for the Engine Boss Course, which is designed to ensure municipal fire departments meet the training and practical requirements for provincial wildfire deployments, said a news release.

“During the field training portion, residents can expect to see a large presence of firefighting crews and equipment in a number of locations near Burnaby Mountain, where crews will be trained on tactics to protect homes in the event of a wildfire,” said the city.

Training will also be occurring in the Oakmount Crescent area, off Royal Oak Avenue near Deer Lake.

“The training is considered low impact to homes and park areas,” said the city. “The Burnaby Fire Department will be reaching out to residents in select areas for permission to access yard space.”

Residents with questions or concerns about this training course should contact the Burnaby Fire Department Public Information Officer, Paul Rushton by phone (604-294-7572) or email ([email protected]).
