Burnaby firefighters are applauding the quick action of a local resident after he helped alert his neighbour of a fire in their Linwood Street duplex.
Tenants of a two-storey duplex in the 3700 block of Linwood Street called the fire department around 6:45 p.m. on Sunday when they noticed smoke coming from the rear downstairs suite.
“It’s a good thing that one of the other tenants in the other side … of the home woke up to smell smoke. He went (to the rear downstairs suite) and banged on the door and he alerted the other tenant, and he was able to wake him up and get him out,” Burnaby assistant fire Chief Bryan Kirk told the NOW.
Investigators with the fire department are still trying to determine what caused the blaze. There was some slight damage to the suite where the fire started, but otherwise it was mostly smoke damage that forced the tenants to spend the night in a motel, Kirk said.
No injuries were reported.
