The Burnaby Teachers' Association is announcing a new essay contest for students on the benefits of secular, universally accessible public education.
"I think we should be proud of the public education system we have accessible," says Patrick Parkes, a former teacher at Moscrop Secondary School, who is now the vice-president of the association. "We want to live in a society where everyone can be treated equally."
The deadline for the contest is Jan. 21, 2013. There will be up to two winning entries in three categories. The prizes include $200 cash or $50 gift certificates, depending on which grade the students are in.
Parkes believes public education should be protected.
"(Secular and universally accessible education) helps students develop empathy and understanding," says Parkes. "We're not just providing one view of the world."
Students are encouraged to submit their entries individually or through their teachers. All entries must arrive at the association's office by the Jan. 21 deadline at 4 p.m. The office is at #115 - 3993 Henning Dr. Submission forms are available at www.burnabyteachers.com.
