Could more choose to vote in person for the Sept. 20 federal election despite Canada's fourth COVID-19 wave?

With general voting day exactly one week from today, it appears voting by mail is not a popular option.

According to Elections Canada, there have been just 985,896 voting kits requested across the country and only 448,103 returned as of Sept. 13.

In Burnaby North, there have been an extremely low 1,196 voting kits requested, while Burnaby South has had even fewer requests at just 1,006.

Elections Canada says that as of mid August, its analysis showed that between two to three million Canadians may opt to vote by special ballot.

During the last federal election in 2019, there were 643,462 requests for special ballot, with 101,121 of those from British Columbia.

Tomorrow (Sept. 14) is the last day to apply to vote by mail. You can apply online or contact any Elections Canada office across the country by 6 p.m.

Your special ballot voting kit must be received on election day by 6 p.m. Eastern time.

Once you have applied to vote by special ballot, you are not allowed to change your mind and vote at advance polls or on general election day on Sept. 20.
