A three-alarm fire called crews to an apartment building on Kingsway near Edmonds Tuesday afternoon. At least one person had to be rescued from the 12th-floor blaze.

At least one person had to be rescued when a fire broke out on the 12th floor of an apartment building in Burnaby Tuesday afternoon.

According to Burnaby Dept. Fire Chief Chris Bowcock, firefighters were dispatched to an apartment building in the 7000 block of Kingsway Avenue, near Edmonds Street, at about 2:50 this afternoon.

The fire was classified as a three-alarm structure fire and required the department to dispatch 41 personnel, Bowcock told the NOW on Tuesday afternoon.

“Third alarm is the engagement of 11 fire companies, two rescue companies and a command complement,” he added.

By about 3:15 p.m. the fire had been extinguished but firefighters were still on scene checking both the 12th and 13th floors for any lingering hot spots.

Bowcock said it is unknown at this time where exactly the fire started and whether it was contained to just one unit on the 12th floor. The cause of the fire is also unknown at this time.

“There was at least one rescue performed on scene and we don’t have any information regarding any injuries at this time,” he said.

Residents were evacuated while firefighters put out the blaze. It’s not clear if they had been allowed to return to their homes at this time.
