Burnaby firefighters want you to help fill their boots this weekend.
From 5 p.m. on Friday (today) until 6 p.m. on Saturday, local firefighters will be out collecting donations for the annual Fill the Boot drive for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
Most often affecting young children, muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular disorder often caused by genetic mutations passed down through generations, according to Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
For more than 50 years, the Burnaby Fire Department has participated in the annual fundraiser, and for the past seven years it has earned the award for the top single boot drive in B.C. Last year, firefighters collected $45,000.
Firefighters will be at different locations around the city, including grocery stores and malls, shaking their boots for donations.
Derek Cousins, a seven-year vet with the department and one of the event’s organizers, hopes this year local firefighters will once again raise top dollars for Muscular Dystrophy Canada.
“We only have the intention to try and make it better and just continue to raise funds,” he said.
