A big swing by the Coquitlam Express resulted in a fun, memorable and rewarding event!
The BCHL franchise raised $11,865 from its inaugural alumni community golf tournament for Canuck Place Children's Hospice and presented a donation cheque today (Sept. 1) outside Poirier Sports and Leisure Complex.
The non-profit organization cares for families of children diagnosed with a life-threatening illness or disease that requires daily medical attention — both in the Tri-Cities and across B.C.
Last year, Canuck Place said close to 820 children were admitted with upwards of 190 conditions.
"When I joined this team I knew how important it was for us to be part of the community and the way of doing that is working for your community," Express vice-president and general manager Tali Campbell told the Tri-City News.
"This donation is exactly what that is. We are working to make our community better. This donation will help families in our community."
The Aug. 20 tournament at Westwood Plateau Golf and Country Club saw local residents, businesses, supporters, alumni and celebrity guests tee it up for the cause, including NHL 20-season veteran Cliff Ronning and BCHL commissioner Chris Hebb.
A silent auction also took place for those who couldn't participate. Funds were also raised for a new Coquitlam Express foundation to benefit young athletes attain scholarships.
The Express' donation is above and beyond its initial goal of $7,500.
"I want to thank all the golfers, sponsors and donors who make our inaugural event such a success and I look forward to making it even bigger next year," added Campbell.
