Are you all ready to embrace the first of the back-to-back long weekends?

Saturday, Sept. 30 marks National Truth and Reconciliation Day and whether you're donning your orange shirt and heading to an event or just about anything else, there's plenty happening in Burnaby this weekend to keep you occupied.

While there's no public National Truth and Reconciliation Day event in Burnaby, local residents can wear their orange shirts and head to Westminster Pier Park (1 6th St.) for a Pow Wow ceremony on Sept. 30 from noon to 4 p.m. Mayor Mike Hurley will be in attendance.

Here's the rundown of some of the events happening in Burnaby this weekend:

Little Miss Higgins

As part of Shadbolt's fall schedule, on Sept. 28, Juno and Maple Blues awards nominee and winner of three western Canadian music awards, Little Miss Higgins, will be playing her country blues, jazz and folk music to the people of greater Vancouver area. Tickets are $30 for adults and can be purchased from the website here

End of summer dance party at the Rec Room

"August slipped away…lost in the memory" — that’s a feeling most of us can relate to. As fall sets in and the sun shines less, it’s time to dance our feelings away. The Rec Room at Brentwood mall is having a "August slipped away end of summer partay" on Friday, Sept. 29 for everyone to dance and reminisce about the summer bliss.

Tickets are $22 for the eager early birds, $25 in advance and $30 at the door. The event is 19+ and minors are required to be accompanied by parents/guardians and must exit before 10 p.m. Tickets can be bought here.

Farmers Market

Fill your baskets with delicious treats and fresh produce at Burnaby Farmers Market, which happens every Saturday until October at the Burnaby City Hall parking lot from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Care for some delicious pick-me-ups from New West’s hot mobile café or other goodies? There will be plethora of baked goods, artisan vendors and more to choose from.

Community Cleanup - Eileen Dailly Leisure Pool & Fitness Centre

Join the Lower Mainland Green Team and the City of Burnaby for a community litter cleanup session this Saturday. The rain or shine event will take place around the Eileen Dailly Leisure Pool and Fitness Centre from 9:45 a.m. to 1 p.m., where volunteers can connect with each other outdoors while caring for the community, ensuring litter stays out of ecosystems and waterways and having fun.

This is the last of the summer cleanup sessions, which kicked off earlier in June. Participants of all experiences and ages are encouraged to register.

Paint Nite

Capture the essence of summer in a canvas to take home at this fun paint night out at the Rec Room on Sunday, Oct. 1.

Bring your friends and discover your inner artist as you create your own painting — an expert will guide you through every step. All supplies will be provided. Just show up, order a drink, and paint. Whether you’re a newbie or a seasoned artist, everyone over the age of 18 is welcome to paint away the night and have a fun time.
