Already have Canada Day plans or want to skip the crowds? No problem, there's other things on the docket of events in Burnaby this long weekend.

Mountaintop Game Jam

Calling all university students! Hosted by the SFU Computing Science Student Society, join this 24-hour in-person event “where individuals and teams try to make a game that fits a secret theme, revealed when the event starts.” With a team or by yourself, program the game, design its mechanics and art and write music – building the whole game from scratch.

You’ll need some knowledge of programming, design, art and music. Food will be provided to participants – and teams with the highest scores could receive a prize.

When: Saturday, July 1 to Sunday, July 2
Where: 8888 University Dr., in the applied science building / TASC1 9204
Cost: Free for SFU students, $12.51 for non-SFU students. To register, go to the Eventbrite page

It’ll be the official launch of Speedball BC on Canada Day, and you can experience first hand this “fast-paced and dynamic sport.”

The event features interactive games, first-hand play opportunities, free giveaways for the brave, and speedball demos from world champions.
