The Burnaby Task Force on Homelessness is calling on local residents to help keep people living on the streets more comfortable this winter.
The task force has partnered with Creekside Community Church to host a donation collection day on Saturday, Oct. 6, from noon to 2: 30 p.m. People are invited to stop by the church and drop off donation of items to help the homeless.
"There are far too many Burnaby citizens who are living in extreme poverty or who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. Faith communities wishing to assist vulnerable people during the winter season need look no father than our own neighbours," said Wanda Mulholland, spokesperson for the task force.
The most urgently needed items are warm blankets, winter coats, winter gloves, hotel sized toiletries (including shampoo, conditioner, lotion, bars of soap and toothpaste), one-zone transit tickets, and Lunch To-Go packages of crackers and tuna. The church is at 6050 Sussex Ave.
The event is in part to kick off Homelessness Action Week, which runs from Oct. 7 to 13.
