A former media spokesperson for the RCMP was found dead on Monday, July 29, in his Abbotsford home.

Fifty-five-year-old Sgt. Pierre Lemaitre worked at the RCMP's Burnaby detachment as the media spokesperson for a number of years before being transferred.

Staff Sgt. Major John Buis - who arrived at the Burnaby detachment shortly after Lemaitre was transferred - said he was a "well-respected guy."

Barb McLintock, spokesperson for the B.C. Coroners Service, confirmed her office is investigating Lemaitre's death, but said it's too early to reveal any details.

"The investigation is in its early, preliminary stages so we don't want to comment on cause or classification at this point," she said in an interview with The Province.

Lemaitre was the Mountie spokesperson at the time of Robert Dziekanski's death at the Vancouver International Airport in 2007. He, along with the rest of the RCMP, was criticized for releasing inaccurate information regarding the circumstances surrounding the Tasering of the Polish man.
