What are the best ways for seniors to stay safe, online at home or in the streets?
Members of the public can find out at a free upcoming event hosted by the Burnaby Seniors’ Resources Society.
George Greenwood, a specialist in identity theft prevention, and Dawn Dickinson from the Burnaby RCMP’s Crime Prevention Unit will speak at Bonsor Recreation Centre tomorrow (Thursday).
“The seniors are so generally so trusting, and they come from an era where you were taught to trust,” Greenwood said. “Once you’ve become a victim, it could hurt you for the rest of your life. The whole thing is to teach people they need to be more careful.”
Greenwood, who’s best-known for his Keeping Your Identity Safe seminars, will present information on safety for homes, personal auto and mortgage and home.
“If they change a few of their basic habits, then they can be more in a position to not be attracting thieves,” he said.
The event is on Thursday, June 25 from 1 to 3:15 p.m. at the Bonsor Recreation Centre, at 6550 Bonsor Ave.
Admission is free, but seating is limited, so register by calling 604-689-8609. Light refreshments will be served.
Thursday’s safety talk is the second in an education series.
The Burnaby Seniors’ Resources Society decided to host the workshop based on interest from seniors.
The society is a group of senior-focused businesses and non-profits dedicated to promoting healthy aging and education support and resources for seniors.
