Burnaby community groups will be receiving their funding soon from provincial money gathered from casino revenues.

On Thursday, the provincial government announced $2,235,135 in funding for 48 organizations for arts, culture andsportin Burnaby through the Community Gaming Grants program.

Recipients of the community grant funding include the Burnaby Minor Hockey Association and the Nikkei National Museum & Cultural Centre.

“Encouraging creativity, cultural exchange, and sporting is key to a healthy, happy community. I’m glad to see such a large investment come to Burnaby,” said Anne Kang, MLA for Burnaby-Deer Lake, in a news release.

Over 700 not-for-profit organizations around the province are receiving approximately $18 million to deliver performing arts, literature, heritage and cultural programs for people of all ages.

The province is also providing approximately $27.5 million to more than 850 sport sector organizations in 2018-19. These programs create opportunities for people who would not otherwise be able to participate and who can benefit from organized, competitive physical activities in their community.

The Community Gaming Grants program provides up to $140 million to about 5,000 not-for-profit organizations in British Columbia each year.
