Future Shop is preparing for the holiday hordes by hiring more than 4,000 seasonal associates, according to a press release from the Burnaby-based company.

Each year, the company hires thousands of additional staff across Canada to cover the busy shopping season.

This year the company is turning to social media sites to help with recruitment, as it did in 2010.

"To find an educated team of associates to help shoppers find the most exciting gifts this holiday season, Future Shop's recruitment plans go beyond traditional job postings," said Chris Taylor, vice-president of human resources for Future Shop. "We recognize that most of our customers and associates are social media savvy, so what better way to recruit them through channels they frequently use."

The company has about 10,000 employees working in its 146 stores throughout the rest of the year, according to the release.

The hiring blitz started at the beginning of October, and the seasonal employees will be in stores until January.

The company is anticipating more than 2.5 million customers during the holiday season, the release stated.

Future Shop, which began as a single store in Burnaby 25 years ago, is a division of Best Buy Canada, also based in Burnaby.

Best Buy is adding more than 2,000 seasonal staff members for the holiday season, as well, according to a press release.

Best Buy has more than 6,500 employees at its 70 stores in Canada.

Both Future Shop and Best Buy Canada are subsidiaries of Best Buy Co.
