‘Get those f***ing diapers off your faces,’ woman shouts at Burnaby COVID-19 vaccine clinic

The pandemic has seen a series of confrontations in Burnaby. Early in 2021, this woman got upset after being told to wear a mask in a Burnaby restaurant.

A Burnaby couple is speaking out after being accosted while waiting to get their COVID-19 booster shots.

Fraser Health has opened up a new vaccination clinic at the Bonsor rec centre, which has sped up the wait for people wanting their third dose of the vaccine.

Harold and Mary M. were early for their appointment and decided to wait outside in the parking lot until it was time. Both were wearing N95 face masks outside.

“A woman came right up to us and started yelling for no reason,” said Mary. “She kept telling us to take off our masks outside. I told her to mind her own business and she got even angrier. She shouted, ‘Get those f***ing diapers off your faces.’ That’s when my husband shot her a look that froze her in her tracks. She gave us the finger and stormed off … All we wanted to do was our duty to protect ourselves and others and this happens. Well, we won’t be deterred by this kind of behaviour. We got our shots and will continue to follow every precaution we have.”

This kind of behaviour isn’t surprising. I recently had to remove a person’s name from a letter to the editor that supported a tax on the unvaccinated because anti-vaxxers had sent out death threats. I get that people won’t like the opinion expressed in the letter, but bullying and threats are not the way to go about it. But these kinds of threats have been sent for the past two years to anyone who supports vaccinations or lockdowns of any sort.

Thankfully, people continue to sign up to be vaccinated.

As of Monday, Jan. 17, 89.2% (4,447,145) of eligible people five and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine and 83.4% (4,155,929) have received their second dose.

In addition, 92.4% (4,281,923) of eligible people 12 and older in B.C. have received their first dose of COVID-19 vaccine, 89.6% (4,155,444) received their second dose and 33.3% (1,544,191) have received a third dose.

Also, 92.7% (4,011,270) of all eligible adults in B.C. have received their first dose, 90.1% (3,897,871) have received their second dose and 35.7% (1,542,958) have received a third dose.

Let's keep it up, folks.

People need as much protection as they can possibly get. Three people have died from COVID-19 just in the past three days.
