Girls grapple their way to Burnaby high school's first B.C. wrestling title

Cariboo Hill Secondary School wrestlers Tehya Chew, Rylie Chew and Kai Pare won the 2024 B.C. girls wrestling championships earlier this month.

Three Cariboo Hill Secondary students made school history last month, becoming the first wrestlers in the school's history to win provincials – and the first team from the school to capture a provincial banner in 38 years.

Competing at the PNE forum in Vancouver from Feb. 22 to 24, Cariboo Hill Grade 12 student Tehya Chew won gold in the 69 kilogram weight class; her sister, Grade 9 student Rylie Chew, took gold in the 54 kg class, and Grade 9 student, Kai Pare, took silver in the 57 kg class.

Together, they were named 2024 girls wrestling team provincial champions.

The team was recognized at a Burnaby school board meeting last Tuesday, but Rylie Chew and Kai Pare were unable to attend because they were in Ottawa at the Canadian Wrestling Championships representing their club team, Coast Wrestling Academy.

"How fitting is that," superintendent Gina Niccoli-Moen said at the school board meeting.

Competing in the Cadet (U17) category at the nationals, Chew finished third in the 53 kg class while Pare finished fourth in the 57 kg class.
