Fall is now here and that means colder nights and the inevitable monsoon rains that we've come to expect in the Lower Mainland. There's still some good weather left and it's time for Burnaby residents to get out and enjoy the best of the city.
1 Get painting for a good cause on Friday, Sept. 28 for the Burnaby Artists Guild painting event at the Edmonds Community Centre from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Paint and brighten up the space for sick children. Members of the guild will be on hand to help and admire your efforts. First-time or experienced artists of all ages, children included, are welcome.
2 Get educated on Friday, 28 for an informational workshop for university transfer programs. Learn strategies from college to university, college highlights and how people can update their adult graduation program. The event runs from 10: 30 a.m. to noon at the Burnaby Multicultural Society at 6255 Nelson Ave. The workshop is free, and anyone interested is welcome to join, especially high school parents and new immigrants. 3 Get buying on Saturday, Sept. 29 for the Burnaby Cactus and Succulent Society plant sale, running from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Royal Square Mall at Eighth Avenue and McBride Boulevard in New Westminster. For more information, contact Pat at 604-921-7042.
4 Get bargain hunting on both Sept. 29 and 30 for the Burnaby Heights alley sale, running from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the 4200-block of Albert and Pandora, 1.5 blocks north of Anton's Pasta Restaurant. You never know what you're going to find as the treasures of 30 families are on sale.
5 Get linocutting with the Burnaby Art Gallery's presentation of Linofest on Saturday, Sept. 29, from noon to 5 p.m. This free family event is part of a nationwide celebration for Culture Days. A dozen artists will have hundreds of prints on display and for sale. There's also free artists' talks and discussions with local and regional printmakers, demonstrations of the linocut process, as well as a to do hands-on family drop-in printmaking project where anyone of any age can try it for themselves. The event's at the Burnaby Art Gallery at 6344 Deer Lake Ave.
6 Get celebrating. 7 Days. 7 Companies. One Idea, put on by the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 8 p.m. Witness one concept through the eyes of seven top-tiered artists from a variety of disciplines and see it come to life, seven different ways. What will the final products be after seven days? The only way to find out will be to come to the free event finale.
