With deadly gang shootings becoming more common in the Lower Mainland, a false alarm isn’t such a bad thing.

That’s what happened near a Burnaby park early Friday morning.

Burnaby RCMP got two reports in quick succession at about 12:30 a.m. from residents reporting they heard eight to nine gunshots in the area east of Burnaby Heights Park, according to Burnaby RCMP Cpl. Mike Kalanj.

Officers responded and talked to the residents who'd made the calls, he said.

They told police they heard what they thought were gunshots but no yelling, car tires screeching or other disturbance, according to Kalanj.

A search of the nearby park soon solved the mystery.

“A member found a whole bunch of fireworks in the park, so it seemed pretty cut and dry that someone was setting off fireworks,” Kalanj said.

He said the fireworks were still warm and the cardboard still dry when the officer found them, despite it having been a rainy night.
