Still looking for the perfect Halloween costume?

Byrne Creek Secondary School’s drama department has what you need – and it won’t cost you a fortune.

“We’ve got everything from Harry Potter to pirates, fairies, medieval,” community theatre instructor Damon Jang told the NOW. “Of course, people don’t have to be strict with these kinds of things. If you want to be a zombie-fairy-pirate, let’s do it. The imagination is really up to the patron.”

For the second year in a row, the theatre department has opened up its costume and props collection for Halloween revellers to rent and purchase.

Proceeds will go towards the school’s productions of Peter Pan in December and Cinderella in May.

As a community school, Jang said Byrne Creek also has a duty to keep its rental and purchase prices affordable.

“We want to try to help the community by keeping prices low and ensure everyone has a rocking Halloween regardless of their financial situation,” he said.

The department took in $700 from the initiative last year.

This year, the tally is already up to about $600, thanks mostly to the department’s big collection of Harry Potter items, amassed during its production of Hogwarts a couple years ago.

Organizers of a Harry Potter party at UBC snapped up about $500 worth of the props, costumes and custom set pieces, according to Jang.

Anyone looking to rent or buy from the Byrne Creek collection can visit the drama department at the school (7777 18th St.) on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 3 and 6 p.m.

“There’ll be racks of costumes to look at, and if there’s nothing that you see, we can look at building a costume for you with pieces,” Jang said.
