A Burnaby garden store will be "in the pink" this weekend.

GardenWorks, in partnership with Meadowlands Horticulrual Inc., is holding its third annual Summer Pink hanging basket sale starting Friday, July 20.

All proceeds from the sale of 10-inch hanging baskets filled with vibrant pink flowers will go to the Canadian Cancer Society.

"We've both, at GardenWorks and Meadowlands, had family members who've had cancer, and I think it's pretty hard to find someone who doesn't have a personal connection (to cancer) these days. It's really touched a lot of people's lives, so we're just happy to be able to find a way to get a little bit more support," said Scott Pearce, owner and vice-president of marketing and merchandise at GardenWorks.

Starting at noon on Friday, the stores will each have about 150 hanging baskets for sale.

Eight different types of mixed plants, including bacopa, verbena, petunias, geraniums, will be used to make up the baskets.

The first year's fundraising sale netted about $5,000, and last year's total was just under $11,000. Pearce said he hopes the sale this weekend will bring in about $15,000.

The Summer Pink sale will run until all the hanging baskets are sold out.

"There tends to be a good little rush the first day," said Pearce. "Some people want to support the cause, other people just want to get a nice fresh hanging basket, and they're happy about that. And then when they find out it's a fundraising thing then they just feel that much better about it."
