Help a sister out

A program that helps young girls stay healthy is expanding in Burnaby, and the group that organizes it needs volunteers.

A program that helps young girls stay healthy is expanding in Burnaby, and the group that organizes it needs volunteers.

Big Sisters runs a mentoring program called Go Girls!, which focuses on physical activity, balanced eating and self esteem for girls aged 11 to 14. The program is eight weekly sessions led by volunteer mentors, aged 19 to 25.

The idea is to help girls build a positive self-image and fulfill their potential.

To get involved, call 604-873-4525 ext. 300 or email [email protected].

(Full disclosure: I am a volunteer Big Sister, and it's a great program, by the way.)

OUTDOOR MOVIES

Bring a couple of blankets, some snacks and get cozy under the stars. There's a free outdoor screening of Big Miracle tonight at SFU's Burnaby campus.

The Scene on the Green event starts at 9 p.m. in the meadow on campus, directly east of the Terry Fox field and the campus security office.

Inspired by a true story, Big Miracle is a family film about a reporter who brings his ex-girlfriend along on a mission to save a family of grey whales trapped in ice.

If you miss that show, there's another free outdoor film - The Lorax - on Aug. 17 at the same location. The Lorax is a computer-animated musical based on Dr. Seuss's famous book of the same title.

Eating issues

Contrary to popular belief, you are not what you eat, according to author Van Clayton Powel.

The Whistler author will be at Burnaby's Willingdon library branch on Monday, July 23 to talk about his new book, aptly titled You are NOT What You Eat. Powel's premise is that poor digestion can lead to serious health problems, and he says he has seven simple solutions outlined in the book.

The talk is free and runs from 7: 15 to 8: 30 p.m. For more information, or to download the first few chapters of the book, go to youarenotwhatyoueat. com.
